Workshops for Digital Coding Skills Laboratories targeted to female school students in Greece

The European Union, through the institutions and under the framework of the European Campaign for combating youth unemployment, is developing tools and knowledge sharing programs for the enhancement of digital skills. Today’s students, as future professionals, should obtain programming skills, knowledge of communication systems, and others in order for them to be considered as human capital in the Digital Single Market. The ability of young students to become familiar and understand new technologies is assessed as particularly crucial, who as they grow older they will have to face greater challenges and competition at the job market, and this knowledge will strengthen them and make them professionally independent and successful.

In this context, KEAN – Cell of Alternative Youth Activities is implementing the project “Workshops for Digital Coding Skills targeted to female school students in Greece” – with a particular focus on girls aged between 12 and 18 years old – , which is co-funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), and it constitutes part of its Campaign entitled “Coding for Girls”, which will be launched from Greece and in September will also be presented in neighboring countries such as Malta, Bulgaria, Romania, Italy, etc.

Manufacturing Commercial Limited Company of the Municipality of Heraklion Attica, Alimos Municipality, Korydallos Municipality and Municipality of Evrotas are participating in the project which is expected to be completed by the end of August. Upon its completion, we expect that more than 50 students and mainly female students, through their active participation in experiential workshops, will gain knowledge regarding the basic principles of Coding and the possibilities that this knowledge offers.

The duration of the workshops is 8-10 hours per group and each group consists of 10-15 female students aged between 12-18 years old.

The ultimate goal of the project is the young participants to be able to recognize and understand the range of possibilities which are offered by the knowledge of Coding and the Internet knowledge and to build confidence, through practice, in implementing even ideas that might be part of their future work (such as creating websites, applications, programming, etc.) regardless of gender, age and place of residence! All the above, subject to the condition that they have understand the terms of Cyber Security and issues related with the data protection when using the Internet.
