Action Type: Youth Exchanges

The increasing flows of migrants and refugees in Europe in recent years have shaped a multicultural and highly diverse social reality. And while the intensity of this diversity is steadily increasing, the same is not true of its representation, receptivity and integration in the workplace. Although many efforts are being made, by all stakeholders and civil society actors, to integrate migrants/refugees into the labour market, little attention is paid to the differentiation between representation and receptivity.

Therefore, the current project is motivated by the fact that migrants/refugees are not included in their working environment and the workforce is not prepared to embrace and respect cultural diversity. False stereotypes and xenophobic perceptions are constantly increasing instead of decreasing, putting this social group in a difficult position, as even when they are working, in most cases they are not offered the same opportunities for participation and promotion. Their cultural specificities are not taken into account when designing the 'culture' of a workplace, they are isolated and face problems of adaptation. Few workplaces have a holistic strategy for the integration of cultural diversity and intercultural training is absent from standard training activities for employees and managers.

In this context, the project aims to:
- Raising awareness about interculturalism and the exclusion of migrants/refugees in the workplace.
- Improve young people's attitudes and behaviours towards cultural diversity and combat xenophobic and stereotypical attitudes.
- To prepare young people to take the initiative in the field, using new technologies, media and other innovative means to carry out awareness-raising activities.
- Promote the exchange of ideas and best practices between organisations and young people from different countries and increase their cooperation.

The main activity is a youth exchange with programme countries that will take place in Ioannina from 01 to 8 July 2021 and is organised by young people from Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, North Macedonia and Serbia. A total of 27 young participants, 6 youth leaders and 3 coordinators are taking part in the activity. These are young people who share common concerns and interests and express their need to intervene in the field and bring about social change. The group is made up of young people from different cultural, social and economic backgrounds, including young people with fewer opportunities. Their common interest is to address these issues and their need to enrich their knowledge and skills in the field.
Its main objectives are to raise young people's awareness of the project's theme, to change attitudes and behaviours towards cultural diversity, to provide them with the necessary tools to organise awareness-raising activities on cultural diversity in the workplace, to develop their skills in using new technologies and different media, to enhance the exchange of views and cooperation among young people from the Balkan countries and to develop important competences and skills of young people.

Its main theme is cultural diversity in the workplace, the integration and acceptance of migrants/refugees in the workplace.
Its methodology is based on non-formal learning methods with an emphasis on experiential and peer learning.

The main achievements of the project will be to raise public awareness about cultural diversity in the workplace and the integration of migrants and refugees in it, to develop young people's capacity to organise and carry out awareness-raising activities on these issues, to prepare them for active participation, to develop young people's intercultural competences, to reduce stereotypes and prejudices, to increase young people's social, communication and organisational skills. At the same time, it will succeed in developing the capacities of the participating organisations in the field and improve their future actions. In the long term, it should reduce negative stereotypes and discrimination against migrants/refugees and facilitate their smooth integration into the working environment. It is also expected that integration strategies will be adopted and cultural education will be included in the training programmes for staff, managers and directors. It is therefore expected that a culture of acceptance will be created in the workplace and in society, which will contribute to the development of a labour market and societies that offer equal opportunities for all and in which their members coexist in harmony, exchanging cultural and other elements for the benefit of their personal, professional and social development.
