Key Action: Youth Mobility

Action Type: KA1

Summary

The youth exchange programme "Migration Perspectives" took place from 13 to 20 May 2019 in Skala Lakonia, Greece. The reason for its organization was the need for young people to develop their intercultural competence and to combat stereotypes and prejudices resulting from the ever-increasing flows of migrants/refugees and existing intercultural societies.

In this context, the project aims to contribute to the social integration of migrants/refugees and to address the prejudices and stereotypes that young people have about this social group.

Thus, it pursued and achieved the following main objectives:

1. Strengthen young people's knowledge of the migration/refugee issue and their understanding of its various aspects.

2. It moderated young people's stereotypes, helping them to identify and challenge them, and contributed to understanding between young people from different cultural backgrounds.

3. It helped them to adopt positive attitudes and behaviours towards diversity and to build positive and constructive relationships with their peers from different cultural backgrounds.

4. Young people's capacity to intervene and act against discrimination and prejudice against individuals and groups is strengthened.

5. It brought together young people from 10 countries, facilitated the exchange of knowledge and views between young people from different countries, developed their multicultural sensitivity and increased mutual understanding and cooperation.

The project was attended by 40 young people aged 16-30 and 10 youth leaders over 18 from Greece, Croatia, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Portugal, Slovakia, Cyprus, Estonia, Cyprus and Turkey.

The exchange was supported by 3 youth workers from Greece. All participants showed a strong interest in the project topics, as well as a strong willingness to convey relevant messages to their peers. These were young people with strong concerns about the increasing incidents of violence and discrimination against migrants/refugees, increased social sensitivity and the need to develop their skills and knowledge in this area.

The participants organised a series of activities around the theme of migration, stereotypes and prejudices and the active participation of young people in tackling them.

The methodology of the project was based on the equal cooperation of the partners and the participation of young people in all phases of the project. The activities were based on non-formal learning methods with a particular emphasis on experiential and peer learning.

Project outputs:

The main results of the project are the awareness created on the issue among the participants as well as the local community and the young people who came into indirect contact with the project. In addition, a deeper understanding of the situation of migrants/refugees, the development of intercultural competences of young people, the mitigation of stereotypes and prejudices and the mobilisation of young people to address these phenomena were achieved. Finally, the personal, social and professional development of young people is another important outcome.
