Semi-Independent Living Apartments for Unaccompanied Children- ITHAKI

The Unit of Supervised Semi-Autonomous Accommodation for Minors - ITHAKI from the K.E.A.N., provides an alternative form of care to unaccompanied minors recognized refugees or asylum seekers, aged 16 to18, regardless of nationality, focusing on their gradual autonomy.

The supervised apartments of K.E.A.N./Ithaki are located in the centre of Athens and have been operating since December 2019. They accommodate unaccompanied minor refugees of various nationalities. The operating staff of the apartments consists of qualified staff (coordinator, caregivers, lawyer, translators, social worker, teacher) who provide services to the minors according to their specialization, while ensuring the smooth operation and implementation of the program.

The purpose and objectives of the program and the operation of the supervised departments of K.E.A.N. - ITHAKI can be summarized in some fundamental priorities in:

  • Direct and permanent access to all health services
  • Provision of psychosocial support services
  • Integration in the educational environment of national public education, according to their skills and interests and with a view to their integration process both in society and in the labour market
  • Provision of additional intensive teaching of Greek and English language in the area of the unit, in order to facilitate the mechanism of education, smooth integration and socialization of minors
  • Access to constant legal support from a lawyer directly cooperating with the unit, in order to coordinate the cases of the beneficiaries and to achieve familiarity with their rights
  • Improving beneficiaries' self-care skills and taking on further responsibilities related to their living and managing practical issues

Our expectation is the smooth integration of young unaccompanied refugees into the social environment through their intellectual empowerment and the development of those potentials that will encourage the cultivation of their own cultural traditions.

The Semi-Independent Living Apartments for Unaccompanied Migrant Children K.E.A.N. / Ithaki is part of the community and national plan of Grant Actions for the Operation of Supervised Apartments for Unaccompanied Minors 16 years old and above. The project is implemented under the National Programme of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (no. 1226/F. Call 40/23-6-2020, Modification of Call / code: 040).
