“Workshops for Digital Coding skills targeted to female school students in Greece”

Project Reference: 12/2017/ΝP/EITPROC

Start: 01-07-2017

End: 31-08 2018

Summary

KEAN in cooperation with the EIT (European Institute of Innovation & Technology), in the framework of the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme and the wider EU Digital Single Market strategy, promoted the implementation of code learning (programming) workshops for children, with a focus on girls aged 12-17 years old, in countries where there is a greater need to strengthen digital skills. These workshops were launched in Greece.

During the summer months, 50 students from schools in Attica and other municipalities had the opportunity to get to know the magical world of digital programming and acquire the basics of code creation! Specifically, KEAN instructors, in collaboration with Google, BCA College and Athens Tech Technology College, together with the municipalities, were in the following municipalities:

Municipality of Alimos (12-14 July)
Municipality of Korydallos (17-19 July)
Municipality of Korydallos (27-30 July)
Municipality of Messini (7-9 August)
Municipality of Neos Heraklion (28-30 August)

In early September, the young programmers met again for the "celebration of code and award-winning ideas". The event was hosted at BCA College in Athens, where participants had the opportunity to discuss and share their experiences with Google executives. Students were divided into expert-led teams and competed and tried to come up with a creative idea that could become an Application. A special Jury-Committee voted for the most innovative ideas, which were awarded and supported by professional developers to become reality!

Project outputs:

-Promoted positive role models and enhanced girls' digital and entrepreneurial skills that help address the gender gap and increased women's participation in science, technology and business

-Encouraged female students to consider careers in technology, entrepreneurship and innovation

-Organise a series of digital and business skills workshops across Europe for girls in primary and secondary education (up to 20 000 girls by the end of 2020), with a particular focus on EIT RIS countries.

-Active participation in major events on women's leadership and entrepreneurship across Europe.

-Participation and content exchange with selected online platforms for women's leadership and entrepreneurship

-Support and promote the Women @ EIT initiative
